I am in the process of updating my blog where I follow current events, so for the time being, and possibly for the rest of the semester, I will be using my painting blog in lieu of creating a new one.
I recently re-watched The Matrix trilogy after not seeing them since their theatrical releases and discovered a few interesting tidbits of information regarding Agent Smith. In The Matrix Reloaded, I noticed the license plate on Smith's car reading IS 5416 and guessed that, like many of the other references in the films, was of biblical origin.
A quick google search later and I found out that IS 5416 refers to Isiah 54:16 which reads:
'"Behold, I have created the Smith that blaoweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.'
Apparently, Smith's name explicitly originates from this.
In The Matrix Revolutions, Smith reveals to Neo that 'it was your life that taught me the purpose of all life. The purpose of life is to end.'
This can be taken a few ways, the first being the most straightforward of the two in that life purely exists so that it can die. The second interpretation, however, I find more interesting. Smith could have meant that once a thing has achieved its purpose, it will die. For example, in the movies it is stated that once a program has achieved its purpose, it will either be re-absorbed (die) into the Matrix or it will flee into exile.
